Private Measurement

Near where I live, there is a 24hr stand-by ambulance center with lasting alarm bell sound and flashing light

Late night times, ambulances would usually turn the sound of urgency off when there’s barely any traffic

What’s left, flashy flashes and weakened hollers of fleeing

Intoxicated, a sense of time is fuzzy, body being wrapped in wetted sheets, the ambulance's shine passed through two pieces of window and penetrated every possible way of measuring the passage of time.

Someone is losing their chance of living, someone is in need of saving, someone is feeling hopeless.

Then where is the background noise? Is it the breathing or the siren speaks?

Reverberations: The Philosophy, Aesthetics and Politics of Noise, Benjamin HalliganPaul HegartyMichael Goddard

Immersion Into Noise, Joseph Nechvatal

Two books discuss the nature of noise, how it applies to social and philosophical conversation. Noise as conceptual and aesthetic subject has been a major topic among art world in recent years, it provides a renewed solution when dealing with assertions regarding video art, live performance and many more means in production of artworks. I found myself not only drawn to the actual sound that complimented artworks, but also the absence of it.

Tiny Border

On the edge of dissociation, episodes of screaming when taking showers, wondering around in blankness, if the meds started to work in half an hour or so, then all senses can finally go back to where they should rest.

‘Avoid solitary at all costs’

Couch-surfing.

This duvet is not mine, the blanket smells unfamiliar, I forgot to bring my stuffed toys with me.

One safe place for the sick is called confinement.

Suicide: A Study in Sociology, Émile Durkheim

A book offers a comprehensive study of suicide in social and cultural context. It tells various aspects of the act of suicide, motive, intention, aesthetics and consequences. The writing provides introspective look-through of this phenomenon, its argument essentially provides a better understanding of the subject matter.

Boozed Royal

Bought the plastic-bottled version of Asian liquor, to avoid the shameful sound of empty glass pounding each other when throw bin bags out. A very self-deceiving excuse in the end, after seeing cramped bottles piled up in the corner. They gradually formed into one creature of disruption. Something that a person just cannot ignore once noticed.

The look of it, reminded me of bearskin hats somehow. Tall, dark and a burden to say the least, a glamorous burden. One very much praised legacy of nothingness. What should we do with those ruthless yet honorable things, even if they might bring up a history of wreck? Some attainable suggestions: applaud, adore and a round of hail.

The Meaning of Things, Eugene Halton and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

The System of Objects, Jean Baudrillard

Two books focus on consumerism, objecthood and significance behind the accumulation of things. They both investigate the relationship between humans and material possessions, suggesting a tie that bonded personhood with the idea of owning, as a result of our consumer society. The action of exploitation, possessing items and even habits triggered by enlarged ownership, is a reflection of conditions of our state of mind, the cultural context and our living surroundings.

Both female artists operated projects using their own bodies in order to make a political statement. The work itself brings up the discussion of means to make a connection between outside world and the inner. Through the gesture of adding or attaching, either literal or suggestive declarations have been made. Such way of making is symbolic, which sometimes can be extremely powerful to the point that it undermines the presentation of objects. However, the risk of it can also be very beneficial for artists when the precise combination of bodies and material things speaking to each other in harmony, then it becomes a statement with two voices.
